Germinate explores themes of personal growth, transformation, and creativity through the use of musical “seeds” — small fragments that evolve and sprout into a larger whole. The piece contrasts serene, natural soundscapes with a repetitive, almost mechanical drive, reflecting how even the organic beauty of growth is rooted in cyclical, recurring processes. Even despite this, each seed’s journey remains uniquely its own.

These ideas take shape through aleatoric elements and guided student improvisation, inviting performers to engage directly with the compositional process. Students are encouraged to respond to prompts, shape their sound in real time, and contribute their individual voices to the ensemble, fostering creativity, active listening, and collaboration.

The piece includes a subtle quotation of Edvard Grieg’s “Morning Mood” from Peer Gynt. This familiar fragment, like a blossom gradually unfolding at dawn, serves as a reminder of the beauty that can grow from simple ideas and the natural unfolding of musical creativity.

Germinate concludes with an unfinished gesture: a final sprout just beginning to break through. It’s a reflection of ongoing growth, and a reminder that each student’s creative journey continues beyond the performance.
